CFMS President 1966 to 1967

Charles Howell

CHARLES HOWELL November 5. 1909 -- February 23, 1990.

Charley Howell made many treat contributions to the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies. He served on many committees, was president in 1966-67, was awarded the Golden Bear for his service to CFMS, and was a recipient of the CFMS Scholarship Honoree.

Charley was find a home for the CFMS Museum Specimens when the Ferry Building in San Francisco closed. Thus the CFMS Museum Committee was formed and Charley endeavored to see California and Nevada Minerals displayed at our museums. He worked closely with the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum. He was instrumental in the CFMS building a special California Mineral Case at this museum where we can proudly see The CFMS name on the case of California minerals.

Charley, a retired Lt. Commander of the U.S. Navy, was a teacher, a master craftsman, a master leader in our society, and a friend to many. Our sympathy is extended to his wife Stell, and his family.

CHARLIE HOWELL - Charlie as most people knew him, was a member of SDMG as well as a pillar of the San Diego Lapidary Society. He wore two hats working for many years for both clubs. His last job for SDMG was in the late 70s when he was on the SDMG Board and was Collection Chairman. He was very active with the CFMS and was a Past President of that organization. He was involved in the CFMS's Museum Collection & worked with several museums on behalf of the CFMS. Our sympathy to Stella and family.
