C.F.M.S. Thulite Collecting Trip
Ludlow, CA
February 22, 2014

by Adam Dean, Field Trip Leader

We started the day with a nice breakfast at the Ludlow Café and before we knew it there were 44 Rockhounds buzzing around the Café ready to go in search of treasure.

After a short meeting and safety instructions I had everyone look at a piece of rough, some slabs and a Sphere I had made from this material so they would be familiar with what it looks like and what you can do with it. Once we finished our meeting we hit the highway and where off and running, the caravan wound down the highway like a sidewinder in the sand and soon we were in the heart of the collecting area.

Upon arrival we all agreed on a stopping time for lunch and then everyone was off and looking for their treasures. As I watched over the crowd like a sheep herder a great feeling of joy came over me; I love to see people happy and doing what they like. This day was like a wedding, we put a lot of work into it and before you knew it; it was almost over. We all meet back at the trucks for lunch and everyone ended up with sacks of beautiful rough Thulite.

After a short lunch we all headed out for our Second destination of the day to Lavic siding and finished the day there with a fantastic sunset and some great Jasper. During the day I witnessed many smiles and sacks full of great rock, it was a terrific day and I look forward to see everyone out in the Mojave again someday.

Best Wishes

Adam:

Thanks SO MUCH for your leadership yesterday. Cathy and I had a great time.

I have posted the following on the Kern County Mineral Society Facebook page (we don't have a website yet). Please join in and send us a Friend request: The guy in the middle (blue shirt) is Southern California & Nevada field trips Co-chairman Adam Dean. About 40 people gathered in Ludlow to sign in with Adam and go to collecting localities for Thulite and for Jasper and Agate. Adam was a courteous and helpful leader, and Cathy and I had a wonderful time, although we wore ourselves out and had to leave early to get back to Bakersfield and sleep off the aches. We found some nice material.

Again, thanks to Adam for his leadership. His website is www.theagatehunter.net

Thanks again,

Adam,

Just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how much I appreciated your leadership at last weekend's field trip. Your experience and vast knowledge of the area and collecting sites helped me to procure some wonderful examples of both Thulite and Lavic Jasper. I got home and cut some cabochons and they are already mounted in jewelry.

Thank you Adam and relay my thanks to the CFMS for the wonderful opportunity to enjoy the resources of our wonderful So Cal desert!

Sincerely,
John Klima

DEAR ADAM,

THANK YOU FOR THE FIELD TRIP LAST SATURDAY. WE APPRECIATE HOW WELL ORGANIZE THE TRIPS ARE AND HOW YOU LOOK OUT FOR EVERYONE IN YOUR GROUP. IT WAS FUN LOOKING FOR AND FINDING THULITE. WE FOUND A PIECE THAT SHOULD MAKE A GOOD SPHERE. THE SECOND LOCATION WAS ALSO EXCITING AS WE FOUND JASPER AND I WAS AMAZED AT THE COLOR VARIATIONS. LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT TRIP.

Adam,

Thank you for organizing and leading such a fantastic trip! We enjoyed every minute of it. Not only we collected some interesting rocks; but also learned about the geology in the area. The people on the trip are all friendly and eager to share their knowledge about minerals and rocks. Your effort to make the trip educational and fun is greatly appreciated. We look forward for the next one.

Hi Adam, I want to thank you for leading the trip for Thulite and Lavic Jasper. I have been on many field trips over the years and I think this is the most enjoyable I have been on. I was impressed by your local and Rockhound knowledge. It is always good to have a leader with as much experience in an area as you have. I would also like to commend you for your attention to safety. When we got to the Thulite dig I understood why you made sure everyone was on the same page. I really liked how you walked around answering questions and helping people get the most out of the trip. It was nice that there was lots of available material. I live near Santa Cruz but I can say the long drive was worth making...I'm ready to go again!

Thanks again,
Dave Allman

Sharon and I want to thank you for the great field trip in the Mojave last weekend. We had a great time and learned a lot about rocks and geology from you. We really appreciate the chance to collect Thulite in California. Lavic was also a great experience for us I am attaching some photos that I took on the field trip.

Thanks for the thulite slabs. I will be sending one of them to Norway after I get it polished. Let me know if you want prints of any of the photos. The best rock photo is pretty good, but would have been better if I had brought my macro lens

Hi Adam!

This is Cherryl LaMar. I am a member of Hi-Desert Rockhounds and attended your trip to Ludlow and Lavic on 2/22. I enjoyed it very much and it gave me an idea about a CFMS sponsored field trip. It was great, very organized, well planned and lots of info on other minerals we found as well. I learned a lot. You gave us lot's of info re: safety along the way...great to be reminded.

I found Thulite and lots of Jasper. So much Jasper...very nice. Some found lots of Thulite. It was interesting the difference in the types of terrain you took us to. Great to mix it up. I like that too! I had a great time! I look forward to being included on future field trips.
