CFMS
Memorial Day Weekend Field Trip
Lavic Siding Jasper
May 26, 2012

by Adam Dean, Field Trip Leader

The day started with a mild breeze and many Rockhounds buzzing around, anxious to go collecting. We started the journey with 30 cars, 50 people and 5 dogs.

Our first spot of the day started with some collecting at Lavic Siding in one of my favorite areas. There were many bags filled with traditional Lavic jasper, and there were also a couple special pieces found. Chris Koch found a great piece with Sagenite and another young man found a great piece of tube agate with blue Agate Tubes and Cherry red filaments.

After collecting this area for several hours, we all had some lunch and discussed my second planed exploration for the day. I had a surprise planned for everyone, and we all packed up and headed out for Pyramid Peak flame Agate just across the freeway in The South Cadys Mountains.

This was a wonderful decision, everyone was so excited. Upon arrival at Pyramid Peak, we had a short talk about where to collect and before you knew it, it was the end of the day and many people were on their way home.

Teresa and I stayed till just about dark to make sure everyone was out one safely on the road.

We ended with the same 30 cars, 50 people and 5 dogs, and everyone had sacks full of rocks, smiles and no one got stuck in the sand or hurt. All in all it was a great day.

P.S I will be planning something special for this fall. Keep up to date with the CFMS web site so you do not miss out on a trip. We look forward to your company during our future exploration and recovery of Lapidary materials.

Best Wishes and Better Agate!

Actually there were 30 vehicles the largest field trip I have ever been on. Here are some pictures of both Lavic Siding and the Cadys. Thanks to Adam Dean for leading this trip and giving us his expertise.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for a really enjoyable day of rock hunting. The organization and execution of the trip and the selected sites were great. We found beautiful Jasper and Agate. It was our first trip and it completely exceeded our expectations. As promised we attached a couple photos.

Happy rock hunting,
Sabine and Rainer
